Payment orchestration platform

For a security solutions provider. A serverless, multi-client platform that orchestrates the full transaction lifecycle (authorization, capture, refund, 3DS, risk and tokenization) and serves both e-commerce and physical POS terminals from a single core, helping payment processors shrink their PCI scope without giving up full processing.

A multi-client payment platform that absorbs card-data handling (across e-commerce and physical terminals) and orchestrates processing against Cybersource, helping payment processors shrink their scope under PCI certification.

The challenge

Payment processors face a broad, costly scope in their PCI-DSS certifications: as long as card numbers (PAN) flow through and are stored in their own systems, their entire infrastructure stays in audit scope. A security solutions provider set out to offer those processors a platform that would absorb that card-data handling, across both e-commerce (card-not-present) and physical POS terminals (card-present), which speak the binary ISO 8583 protocol over TCP, and orchestrate full processing against Cybersource, giving them a way to shrink their PCI scope without giving up authorization, capture, refund, 3DS, risk or tokenization.

The solution

A single, multi-client orchestration core that handles the transaction lifecycle and keeps the authoritative record
A REST API to integrate e-commerce, with per-client configuration and workflow rules
An ISO 8583 gateway that connects physical terminals: it receives the binary messages over TCP, unpacks them and routes them to the same core (with support for network dialects, EBCDIC and TLV)
Tokenization (network tokens) that takes card data out of the processor's scope and enables recurring payments
A gateway layer that isolates the Cybersource integration: it translates schemas, signs and encrypts requests and normalizes responses
3DS and risk scoring built into the same flow
Multi-client, with configuration and key management isolated per processor

The outcome

Each processor shrinks its scope under PCI-DSS certification: card data stays out of their systems
A single core serves every client and both channels (e-commerce and physical terminals) without duplicating business logic
The full transaction lifecycle in one place, with an authoritative, traceable record

How we did it

Serverless core on AWS Lambda with API Gateway up front, and a PostgreSQL ledger
A containerized ISO 8583 gateway for the terminals' persistent TCP connections, invoking the core via Lambda
Cybersource integration decoupled via Lambda-to-Lambda invocation
End-to-end encryption of sensitive data (AES/RSA with AWS KMS) and log masking
Observability with distributed tracing (X-Ray) and metrics (Prometheus)

The challenge

A regional bank lacked a single view of its net profitability by client, product, account manager and line of business. Financial margin, fees and the cost of credit risk lived in separate systems and processes; without a consistent internal funds transfer pricing, it couldn't measure how much each client or product actually contributed, and pricing and commercial-focus decisions were made without that basis.

The solution

Computes each product's contribution (savings accounts, transactional accounts, certificates of deposit, loans, credit card and investments) by combining accrued income and expense with transfer-pricing pool income and cost, to obtain the financial margin
Distributes fee income and expense (private, transactional, loans, cards and custody banking) to each client and product
Builds in the cost of risk: provisioning expense (month-over-month change in the provisioned balance) and write-offs
Consolidates financial margin plus fees into the gross contribution, attributed to client, account, account manager, line of business and economic group
Reconciles each product against the accounting balance, explicitly recording what cannot be assigned to clients

The outcome

Net profitability by client, product, account manager and line of business, at month close
Pricing and commercial-focus decisions based on real contribution
Cost of funds (transfer pricing) and cost of risk built into profitability, not kept on separate sheets
A single source of truth for finance, risk and the commercial network, consumed from the bank's reporting
In production and running monthly, with the historical series reprocessed and figures validated by the client

How we did it

Medallion architecture (bronze / silver / gold) on Databricks, with a final load into the bank's Oracle data warehouse (datamart partitioned by period)
Transfer pricing via daily pool rates (general, per certificate of deposit and per loan) as cost and income of funds
Client (from the CRM) and account dimensions unified and reused across the whole flow
Cost of risk computed independently from provisions and write-offs
Account-level reconciliation product by product against the chart of accounts
